Scorpio and Pisces compatibility at 82: the same score as Cancer and Pisces, so where do they differ?

Scorpio and Pisces compatibility is 82, joint 1st of 78 with Cancer and Pisces (2 pairs tied). We recalculate from the code to show where two pairs with the same 88 pair score part ways.

At nine on a Sunday evening, Taejun was doing the dishes. There were only six bowls, but the water had been running for twenty minutes. Haeun, reading in the living room, stopped turning pages at some point and listened. Taejun was rinsing the same mug for the third time. Scrub, rinse, hold it up to the light, pick up the sponge again.

Taejun is a Scorpio; Haeun is a Pisces. Haeun also remembered that after a phone call with his father that afternoon, Taejun had stood out on the balcony for a long time. She didn't know what the call was about. Taejun hadn't said a word.

Haeun closed her book, went to the kitchen and stood next to him. "I think that mug is clean now." "Yeah, it is." Taejun set it upside down on the rack and picked up the next bowl. "Nothing's wrong. I'm just a bit tired."

Haeun didn't ask anything more. She picked up a dish towel and started drying the bowls he had washed, one by one. For a while they stood side by side without talking. As the last plate went into the cupboard, Taejun turned off the tap and said, "Dad's hospital test results are going to be late." Haeun just nodded. She knew it had taken twenty minutes of running water for that one sentence to come out.

On SCHROE (schroe.kr), Scorpio and Pisces get a base overall of 82. As our October 17 piece on reading zodiac compatibility already pointed out, 82 is the highest score among all 78 pairs, and Cancer and Pisces score the same 82. The two pairs share joint 1st place (2 pairs tied). So where do two pairs with the same 82 part ways? This piece follows that question from the Scorpio and Pisces side. The short answer first: the numbers don't split where you'd expect.

Put the numbers side by side

We recalculated both pairs from src/data/zodiacCompatibilityScores.js in deploy 6760abe0. The base overall comes from the formula on line 285: add the sign-to-sign pair score and the element combination score, divide by two, round. Chemistry and long-term are taken straight from the element combination (lines 288 and 292), and conversation, on line 291, blends the overall with the element's conversation value and then eases it toward the middle (lines 257-264).

| Item | Source lines | Scorpio×Pisces | Cancer×Pisces | Gap | |---|---|---|---|---| | Pair score | L185, L245 / L121, L241 | 88 | 88 | 0 | | Water-water element overall | L46 | 75 | 75 | 0 | | Base overall | L285 | 81.5 → 82 | 81.5 → 82 | 0 | | Chemistry | L46, L288 | 80 | 80 | 0 | | Conversation | L291 | 74.8 → 75 | 74.8 → 75 | 0 | | Long-term | L46, L292 | 68 | 68 | 0 | | Rank of 78 | | joint 1st (2 pairs tied) | joint 1st (2 pairs tied) | |

We knew chemistry, conversation and long-term share element values. So if there was a difference, we expected it in the pair score. But the pair score is 88 for both. The Pisces cell in Scorpio's row (L185), the Scorpio cell in Pisces' row (L245), the Pisces cell in Cancer's row (L121) and the Cancer cell in Pisces' row (L241) are all 88. Same element, same pair score, so even the unrounded value is 81.5 for both, and every input to the conversation formula is identical.

So there is no way to tell this pair's 82 apart from Cancer and Pisces' 82 using the numbers on screen. Cover the names on the two score cards and you can't say which is which. It isn't just that the result is the same 82. Every ingredient that makes the 82 is the same.

One more thing: 82 sits right on a rounding edge. The average of 88 and 75 is 81.5, and the code rounds .5 up, so it becomes 82. Had the pair score been 87, the result would have dropped to 81 and the pair would not share first place. The two pairs sit in the same cell because their pair scores match without a single point of difference.

The split is outside the 82, in Scorpio's row

So do the two pairs really not differ anywhere? Within the single 82 cell, no. But this score table gives each of the twelve signs a row of its own. Scorpio's 82 lives in Scorpio's row; Cancer's 82 lives in Cancer's row. The same 82 can sit in rows whose other eleven cells look quite different.

Recalculate both rows' base overalls and you get this. Scorpio scores 75 with Capricorn, 74 with Virgo and 71 with Taurus. Cancer scores 65 with Capricorn, 71 with Virgo and 74 with Taurus. On the earth side, Scorpio is 10 points higher on Capricorn and 3 higher on Virgo, and 3 lower only on Taurus. Scorpio is higher on the fire side too: 50 with Aries against Cancer's 41, and 50 with Sagittarius against Cancer's 40. Across all twelve cells, Scorpio averages 61.6 and Cancer 60.1.

In the chart, both rows peak at the same place: Pisces at 82. Both put Pisces first, and both put each other second at 80. The difference is below that. Cancer's row clusters its high scores in the three water cells plus Taurus and Virgo, then drops off quickly. Scorpio's row has a second peak outside water, on the earth side, with Capricorn at 75 and Virgo at 74. In the raw pair scores, Scorpio gives Capricorn 80 (L183) and Virgo 78 (L179). Cancer gives the same cells 60 (L119) and 72 (L115).

From the Pisces side, the story is simpler. In Pisces' row (L235-250), the Cancer cell and the Scorpio cell are both 88. In the code, the two partners sit at exactly the same distance from Pisces. So the difference between "the same 82s" doesn't come from Pisces. It comes from the partner, and specifically from what kind of row Scorpio has.

When water that reaches toward earth meets Pisces

From here on, this is one way to read the numbers. The code doesn't say why Scorpio's row gives earth signs high marks. But the comment on L173 lists Virgo and Capricorn as Scorpio's good matches alongside Cancer and Pisces. Cancer is the same water element, yet the comment on its row (L109) has no Capricorn.

Earth signs are often described in terms of structure, schedules and tangible results. That Scorpio's row also scores high in that direction can be read as that texture running through how Scorpio handles feelings: when something shakes them, they grab a task, sort things out, and digest it first within a range they can control alone, rather than putting it into words. Taejun rinsing a mug three times after talking to his father is that kind of scene. Washing dishes has a visible end, and it's something your hands can control.

Standing next to him is a Pisces. Pisces' row gives Cancer and Scorpio the same 88, followed by Taurus at 75 and Capricorn at 72. Pisces is open toward earth too, but its highest cells sit at exactly the same height on the two water signs. Put that next to the usual description of Pisces as the sign that catches emotional currents first, and Pisces becomes the person who hears how long the water has been running before anything is said.

If Cancer and Pisces' 82 is a picture of two people who share feelings right away, Scorpio and Pisces' 82 is closer to one person burying feelings inside a task and the other recognizing where they're buried. The same 82 can hold differently shaped relationships because the score doesn't end in that one cell. It sits on top of each sign's whole row.

Making good use of this 82

Where this pair runs into trouble comes from the same picture. Pisces can notice too fast, and Scorpio can feel uncomfortable being noticed. To Pisces, "Is something wrong?" is kindness. To a Scorpio still sorting things out alone, it can feel like a hand lifting a cover. So what this pair needs is less about asking more and more about where to put what you've noticed.

What Haeun did that night wasn't a question. She stood beside him and took on part of the same task. She added a hand to the thing Taejun was controlling without taking it away from him. If Scorpio buries feelings in a task, Pisces can make a place next to that task. The words come out from there: as the dishes wind down, halfway through a walk, while putting away groceries.

There's something Scorpio can do too. Waiting to speak until everything is sorted often means the moment never comes. So it helps to practice handing over the state before the content. "I can't talk about it yet, but something's going on." That one sentence tells Pisces where to wait without having to dig. The one who notices carries less of the burden of guessing alone, and the one who hides no longer has to hide the fact that they're hiding something.

After that, a small signal grew between Taejun and Haeun. On days when there's something he can't talk about yet, Taejun puts a single dot at the bottom of the grocery list on the fridge. When Haeun sees it, she doesn't ask that evening; she does the dishes with him instead. On dot days, the conversation usually starts around the time the last plate goes in.

Reading the 82 again

On screen, Scorpio and Pisces compatibility at 82 can't be told apart from Cancer and Pisces at 82. Pair score 88, element overall 75, chemistry 80, conversation 75, long-term 68: all identical, and they share joint 1st of 78 (2 pairs tied). What belongs to this pair alone isn't inside the 82 cell but around it: Scorpio's row, which also reaches high toward earth, meeting Pisces' row, which sets Cancer and Scorpio at exactly the same height.

Taejun's father's results came the following week, and thankfully it was nothing serious. That evening, partway through the dishes, Taejun spoke first. "No dot today." Haeun laughed and put down the towel.
