Can you find a couple that lasts by looking at a number? SCHROE's (schroe.kr) zodiac compatibility includes a long-term score, and across all 78 sign pairs it averages 55.3. Taurus and Cancer get 75. That's 19.7 points above average.

Look closer and something unexpected turns up: the 75 doesn't belong to Taurus and Cancer alone. Every one of the nine pairs where an earth sign (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) meets a water sign (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) scores exactly 75 for long-term. So this piece asks two questions. Why does earth plus water rate so high for lasting? And if Capricorn × Pisces gets the same 75, why does it land at 71 overall while Taurus × Cancer reaches 74?

The 75 comes from the elements

SCHROE's zodiac score is built in two steps. First it looks up which elements the two signs belong to (fire, earth, air, water) and pulls the values set for that element combination. Then it brings in a pair score set directly for the two signs, and combines the two into the overall score.

Chemistry and long-term come straight from the element combination. For earth and water those values are 65 for chemistry and 75 for long-term. So whether it's Taurus × Cancer, Virgo × Scorpio or Capricorn × Pisces, long-term is 75.

Of the ten element combinations, only earth with earth (82) beats 75 on long-term. Earth with water is second, followed by water with water (68) and fire with air (62); fire with water is lowest at 32. Across the 78 pairs, 15 score 75 or higher for long-term: the six earth–earth pairs and the nine earth–water pairs.

In fairness, the code doesn't explain why earth and water get 75. The usual reading is that earth builds and holds, while water embraces and carries on; both are more at ease staying put than changing fast. You can read the 75 as that intuition written down as a number.

Taurus × Cancer vs Capricorn × Pisces: a 3-point gap

If long-term is identical, where does the difference come from? The pair score. SCHROE keeps a separate score for every direct pairing of the twelve signs, and the overall is the average of that pair score and the element score of 70.

Taurus × Cancer has a pair score of 78, the same from either side. (78 + 70) ÷ 2 = 74 overall. Capricorn × Pisces has a pair score of 72. (72 + 70) ÷ 2 = 71. A 6-point gap in pair score halves into a 3-point gap overall.

Communication follows a little of that gap too. It blends the overall with the element's communication value of 70 and then softens extremes, giving 69 for Taurus × Cancer and 68 for Capricorn × Pisces. Chemistry 65 and long-term 75 are identical for both.

Here are the nine earth–water pairs in order of pair score:

| Earth–water pair | Pair score | Overall | |---|---|---| | Scorpio × Capricorn | 80 | 75 | | Taurus × Cancer | 78 | 74 | | Virgo × Scorpio | 78 | 74 | | Taurus × Pisces | 75 | 73 | | Taurus × Scorpio | 72 | 71 | | Cancer × Virgo | 72 | 71 | | Capricorn × Pisces | 72 | 71 | | Cancer × Capricorn | 60 | 65 | | Virgo × Pisces | 60 | 65 |

Taurus × Cancer ties for second of the nine, and ties for 14th of all 78 (four pairs share the score). Each also ranks the other highly: for Taurus, Cancer comes third after Capricorn (77) and Virgo (76); for Cancer, Taurus comes third after Pisces (82) and Scorpio (80).

Put simply: the elements lay the groundwork for lasting, and the pair score decides how well the two fit on top of it. On the same foundation, Taurus × Cancer is rated one notch better matched than Capricorn × Pisces.

The evening the renewal notice came

Here is what a long-term 75 can look like in real life.

Hyun is a Taurus; Mina is a Cancer. They've lived together for four years in a two-bedroom rental. At the end of September the landlord texted: the lease was up in two months, and renewing would mean a 5% increase.

That Saturday Hyun spent a long time on a property app before showing Mina his screen: a five-year-old building two subway stops away. One room bigger, and the rent actually a little below what the current place would cost after the increase. "Let's go see it Sunday. No harm in looking."

On Sunday afternoon they went. Light ran long across the living room, and the utility balcony had room for two washing machines. Hyun pulled out a tape measure and checked the fridge space. The bed would fit, he said, and so would the bookshelves. When the agent said, "You don't see places like this at this price anymore," Hyun nodded.

Mina stood alone in the empty small bedroom. There was nothing in it. She didn't dislike it; she actually liked it. And yet her throat tightened.

On the bus home Hyun asked, "What did you think? I liked it. Even after moving costs, we'd save a few thousand over two years."

Mina looked out the window. "Yeah. It was a nice place."

Hyun heard "yes." That night he requested quotes from two moving companies. Mina saw them and said nothing.

It was three days later that she spoke up. She'd just picked up her coat from the dry cleaner downstairs, where the owner smiled and said, "Take care of yourself this winter too." Standing in the doorway, coat still over her arm, Mina said, "Honestly, I don't want to move."

Hyun was startled. "You said it was nice."

"The place was nice. But we've lived here four years. It's the first home we shared. I watched it rain through that window the day we brought the cat home. The dry cleaner knows our names. You're right that we'd save money. But when you count it that way, everything we built here turns into zero."

Hyun didn't say anything for a while. For him, a home was something you could swap out if the price, space and commute worked. For Mina, a home was the time that had piled up inside it. Both wanted stability, but Hyun's stability meant enough money and room, and Mina's meant the familiar things staying where they were.

What Hyun said next wasn't what Mina expected. "I actually like it here too. I just thought moving was the sensible thing." He didn't delete the moving quotes that night. Instead, he and Mina wrote a message to the landlord together: four years, never a late payment, the place kept clean. Would the landlord consider a 3% increase in exchange for confirming the renewal early?

The landlord came back the next day with 4%. They took it and signed on for two more years. At Hyun's suggestion, they agreed to put the 1% they'd saved into a separate "next home" account every month, and to talk again in two years about whether to move. Mina named the account "The Cat's Room."

Reading the scene back through the numbers

You can see how earth and water meet in this scene. Hyun and Mina didn't end up far apart; both chose to stay. Long-term at 75 touches exactly this: a tendency, facing big decisions, to look in the same direction, toward keeping and building.

But the scene also holds a risk the 75 doesn't mention. For three days Mina said only "it was a nice place," and Hyun requested quotes without checking. Neither was good at bringing conflict to the surface. Earth and water both tend to endure quietly, so it takes a while before discomfort turns into words. You could read that as one reason communication (69) sits below long-term (75).

Chemistry at 65 is this pair's lowest number. There's no moment of sparks in Hyun and Mina's story. Instead there's the dry cleaner's greeting, built up over four years, and an account called The Cat's Room. Taurus × Cancer's high score comes less from heat than from things that accumulate slowly.

The 3-point gap with Capricorn × Pisces can be read through this scene too. Both pairs share the same long-term foundation. The pair score of 78 says Taurus's practicality and Cancer's emotional depth bruise each other less under one roof. Like Hyun writing to the landlord instead of booking movers, it's a pair where the math and the heart end up in one decision. The code doesn't say why it's 78, though, so this is one way of reading the number.

What a lasting pair can miss

When a Taurus and a Cancer decide something together, three things help:

  • Ask about "it was nice" once more. A Cancer's short answer often has more behind it. Try: "It was nice, but is anything bothering you?"
  • Put numbers and memories on the same list. Saving a few thousand and four years of history are different units, but both are inputs to the decision. Count only one and the other becomes zero.
  • If you decide to stay, set a date for the next conversation. Two people comfortable with putting off change need a promise for the next decision, like The Cat's Room account.

A long-term score of 75 means these two don't scatter easily. Turning that 75 into real years means asking, one more time, about the feeling behind a quiet answer.
